8/15/18: The weather prediction for the next couple days looked pretty good, but another cold from was predicted for Friday. It was supposed to stall, bringing more unsettled weather for the coming weekend. We decided to anchor out for a night and chose a place suited for the forecasted winds called Still Pond. It was only 3 hours south from Georgetown, so it would be a short, easy day. We realized that this would be our first night at anchor since Baie Fine last summer!
Even the the winds were blowing perfect at 10 knots, we didn’t think we’d get to sail today. Most of our trip to Still Pond was navigating back out the winding Sassafras River, and once it did widen enough, we would be within a couple miles of the anchorage. But, such has been our luck on this “sailing” journey!
We arrived at the little bay and had to dodge the multitudes of crab pots that were set across the entrance. There were hundreds of little floats, each marking a pot, and we had to be careful not to run into any of them. That would be a good way to get a bunch of line wrapped around the propeller shaft which could cause all kinds of problems. Even from a ways out, we saw that there were two other boats already anchored, so we motored around a little and chose a spot half way between them. We dropped “the hook” and settled in. It was a very nice spot. The bay was “V” shaped, with woods and a little beach on one side of the “V”, and some really nice houses on the other. A little creek emptied into the bay at the bottom of the “V”.
After a while, the two boats that were there packed up and left, but two others came in a while later. We also had several motor boats zipping around, pulling kids on innertubes and boogie boards. A couple jet skis made their appearance, too, but left just as quickly. All the traffic settled down around dinner time, and then it became quiet and still. We fired up the grill, cooked some steaks, and had dinner. We turned in just after dark. All in all, it was a good day. Tomorrow we will head down towards Baltimore, about 30 miles southwest, where we will sit in a marina for a few days. We have laundry to do and are also in need of some major reprovisioning. There are also warnings posted for storms, heavy rain, and potential flooding over the next few days, so we would like to be in a marina while this system passes. After that, we will head out for St. Michaels, Oxford, and Cambridge, hopefully with some more anchoring between stops. Stay tuned!
